The town is composed of two larger districts: Agde and Cap d'Agde. The elder part with its mediaeval centre is Agde. At the time of its foundation, which was approx. 500 years before Christ, the town Agde was directly located at the sea. Due to the siltation by the river Hérault the village can nowadays be found some kilometres inland. Because of residential construction urbanistically driven forward, Cap d’Agde during the 60s until the end of the 70s developed to the south of Agde, the district directly at the sea. This is how the largest European naturist village, holiday homes, marinas and the first water park of Europe developed. The Aqualand.

The inhabitants of Agde are called Agathois. A huge number of inhabitants living there come from Spain. They escaped to the South of France during the Spanish civil war. After World War II, citizens of the Magreb states joined. In 1942, the town Agde was occupied by the Armed Forces and liberated in 1944.
