In the 17th century, cardinal Armand, in those days the duke of Richelieu, planned the construction of a large military harbour/commercial port at the cap of Agde. This small island that emerged from the volcano Mont St.Loup some 300,000 years ago should have been connected with the mainland. A plan that has never been realized. However, the Fort Brescou was built, an island fort near the coast which served as a state prison until to the 19th century. Author: Cap-forever
