Montpellier One of the few French towns without Roman background. Montpellier was founded by Wilhelm III. Earl of Toulouse. However, Montpellier was mentioned for the first time in 985. At that time, two hamlets were united, a fortress built and this estate surrounded by walls. Nowadays, two towers of the military area are still existing: the Tour des Pins and the Tour de la Babotte. However, these were built at a later time.
