Montpellier

One of the few French towns without Roman background. Montpellier was founded by Wilhelm III. Earl of Toulouse. However, Montpellier was mentioned for the first time in 985. At that time, two hamlets were united, a fortress built and this estate surrounded by walls. Nowadays, two towers of the military area are still existing: the Tour des Pins and the Tour de la Babotte. However, these were built at a later time.

During the 19th century, Montpellier has become an industrial centre due to industrialization. During the 60s, the immigration of French Algerians led to a rapid growth of the town. Many sights! Here e.g. the building of the university in the district Antigone (in the East of the city centre).

Montpellier has rapidly become a business centre with trade relations across the whole Mediterranean and this is why a mixed population of Moslems, Jews and later Protestants developed. During the 17th century, the Aqueduc de Saint-Clément was built, stretching 800 m long across the district "Les Arceaux". This is how water was transported into the town from the St. Clément spring which is 14 kilometres away. The aqueduct has filled large water tanks near the triumphal arch and fed fountains and public water use points.
